Building Power and Breaking Barriers

At SunZia Wind in New Mexico, renowned as the largest wind energy project in the Western Hemisphere and developed by Pattern Energy, Blattner Site Managers Karissa Murillo and Lauren Mansfield are redefining leadership and paving the way for women in construction. In celebration of Women in Construction Week, we share their stories of growth, collaboration and resilience.

Karissa began her career at Blattner ten years ago as a summer Project Administrative Assistant, gradually rising through various roles before becoming a Site Manager. “I never thought I’d be standing where I am today,” she reflects. “The magnitude of this project is incredible, but what I’m most proud of are the connections I’ve made – with my coworkers and the community.”

For her, leadership is about relationships as much as logistics. “Those collaborations are something I’ll always look back on and be proud of,” she says.

Lauren’s path started with a Blattner internship and evolved through a variety of roles, including Field Engineer and now Site Manager. She appreciates the variety and growth construction offers. “Every day is different,” Lauren shares. “I love seeing progress and helping people grow—from field roles into leadership.” She credits her detail-oriented approach and organizational skills for keeping complex projects on track and fostering team success.

Both women recognize the importance of their collaboration as leaders at SunZia. “It’s special having someone who understands the challenges and that you can bounce ideas with,” Karissa notes.

Fellow SunZia Wind Site Manager Dylan Babiracki appreciates how both women lead by example. “In my experience working alongside both Karissa and Lauren, they bring a great deal of leadership, knowledge and positive perspective to the project,” Dylan said, “They drive consistency and their ability to identify issues and propose solutions is what makes them great leaders.”

Their advice for women considering construction? “Why wouldn’t you?” says Karissa. Lauren agrees, adding, “Women can do anything. Just go for it and be yourself.”

Together, Karissa and Lauren are managing this monumental project while shaping the future and the faces of the industry.
